WHAT IS IT?
Lymphedema is a condition of chronic swelling that may occur anywhere in the body, including the arms, legs, abdomen, and face. You may be born with it, or it may develop later in life after damage to your lymphatic system.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The goal of Lymphedema Therapy treatment is to assist clients in decreasing their swelling through a process known as complete decongestive therapy, also termed CDT. CDT is considered the gold standard of treatment for lymphedema and involves an intensive program of compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage, exercise, and education in self-care.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM TREATMENT?
Components of CDT and MLD may be used to help individuals diagnosed with other types of chronic swelling, such as those with Chronic Venous Insufficiency or Vein Disease, traumatic injury, extensive surgical scarring, or removal of lymph nodes when treating cancer.
IS IT SAFE?
Swelling in the body can arise from a variety of issues; therefore, it is beneficial that you discuss attending lymphedema therapy with your doctor before your first treatment. Otherwise, this treatment is safe and effective. The treating therapist has undergone extensive training and is certified as a lymphedema therapist, or CLT (Certified Lymphedema Therapist).
